Osborn the Bear is the stuffed mascot for Osborn School.  He travels around the school visiting classrooms and sharing various learning experiences with the children. He appears in a classroom one morning with his backpack and journal ready to go, stays a week and ventures off to another classroom.  Below are some of Osborn's journal entries from over the years.

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

I just got back from Mrs. Tavolacci’s class. I learned so much from the students of 4-T this week. The first thing I learned is that I have to hide from them better next time because they found me so quickly when I first got to the classroom!

An interesting lesson I participated in taught me what happens to my lunch after I eat.  The digestive system is fascinating!  The students took a test on it, and even cut out a model of what the digestive system looks like and taped it to my shirt.  We also conducted an experiment to see how the digestive system works. We used breath mints and compared how quickly they dissolved in vinegar and water to mimic how digestive juices work. It was amazing to see!

For reading I got to read some of the short stories the students have been working on during their Literary Essay unit. The students' writing made me very emotional.  I learned a lot of valuable lessons from the stories.

In math I learned how to solve 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problems using the lattice method.  At first it was confusing but, once I got the hang of it, it was so cool!

I watched some awesome current event presentations.  My favorite was on Paddington ( because he is a bear too).

I had so much fun with all the students in 4-T.  I  hope Mrs. Garcia lets me come back and visit them again.  I hope you continue to follow my adventures around the school and continue to read my journal to see where Mrs. Garcia will send me next.

Love,
Osborn the Bear

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls

Happy New Year !!! I hope everyone had a nice break and is all rested up for the rest of the school year.  I feel really lucky because I was able to finish up 2014 and start 2015 with the same class.  Before the break Mrs. Garcia let me spend time with the students of  K-D.  We had a lot of fun! The boys and girls are becoming readers and I was lucky enough to have a lot of stories read to me.   We also learned a lot about adding and subtracting in math, and I got to play their Mystery Number Partner Game.  We finished off 2014 with a class holiday party, and I got to meet all the K-D parents.
2015 kicked off with having just as much fun with the students of K-D. I sure did enjoy spending time with them in their class.  But now it is time for me to go back to Mrs Garcia and tell her all about my time in K-D.  I hope you continue to follow my adventures and read my journal.

Love,
Osborn the Bear

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys, and Girls,
Wait until I tell you about what I did over the long weekend! I got to spend it with 2 of my new friends from Kindergarten, Caroline and Lillian, who are also sisters.   Mrs. Garcia let me leave the school and spend the Thanksgiving weekend with them.  They really took good care of me.
We started off the weekend by having lunch at Pizza 2000.  It’s one of the favorite places for Osborn students to eat.  Then later that evening, I got to help make pies for Thanksgiving Day.  We made an apple and pumpkin pie.  Mmmmm I love the smell of pies when they are baking!
For Thanksgiving, I got to go all the way to Pawling NY, to Caroline, and Lillian’s grandparents' home.  I celebrated the day with 28 of their extended family.  Good thing they didn’t run out of turkey!  Since there was snow on the ground I got the chance to go sledding, which was a lot of fun!
Friday, with my belly full from Thanksgiving, I went into hibernation and rested up.  Saturday morning the girls had me back on the move and we were at Playland Ice Casino for ice skating lessons.
Sunday, I  finished off my weekend with the girls by helping them trim their Christmas tree.  It sure was a lot of fun.  I can’t wait to tell Mrs. Garcia
all about my weekend.  Keep reading my journal to find out where Mrs. Garcia sends me next.

Osborn the Bear

Hello, Moms, and Dads, Boys, and Girls!  I am all rested up after a couple of weeks in the office with Mrs. Garcia, and I was really excited when she told me she was sending me back to the 1st grade to spend the week with Ms. Caulway’s class.  I had a super busy week with them.
I started off the week by watching the circus arts presentation in the gym with the entire school.  Boy it sure looked like a lot of fun.  Maybe one day I will get the courage to try to balance on the giant balls!
Next, I was so lucky because I got to meet the parents of  Ms. Caulway’s students, during the Open House.  It was nice to have the parents visit and let them see the hard, but fun work 1st graders do.   I was able to spend time with each and every student in Ms. Caulway’s class, and I loved when they would snuggle up with me when they read their books.
Just when I thought I couldn’t have any more fun with Ms. Caulway’s class, we went to watch the  4th grade perform circus arts.  My favorite was when they would fly high on the trapeze.   Now, if I can only convince Mrs. Garcia to put a miniature one for me in her office……
I sure had a lot of fun with all the students of 1-C this week.  I have to tell Mrs. Garcia all about it, and work on getting my trapeze.  Find out where she sends me next in my journal.

Osborn the Bear

Hello, Moms, and Dads, Boys, and Girls!  Mrs. Garcia sent me to spend the week with Mrs. Marszycki’s class in the 3rd grade.  I think it was to keep me away from the business of the Scare Fair set up.  I was able to get in on the fun Saturday when I got to go to the Silent Auction and stand by my auction item.  It sure was fun to see everyone as they walked through the auction. Some boys and girls even stopped to talk to me.
In class we read two books, Nightsong by Ari Berk and Bats  by Nicole Iorio.  We compared each of the book’s formats and then used the non-fiction book’s text features to take notes on bats.  There are so many things I did not know about bats.  They are fascinating!
In science, we dissected a plant and identified its parts and functions.  Mrs. Marszycki taught us about the scientific process and I helped everyone review for their science test on plants.
Mrs. Marszycki taught us about latitude and longitude in social studies, and I encouraged all the students to do well on their ice cream multiplication challenge quiz.
It’s been a great start to the year, It’s not easy to type with paws so I am going to catch up on my journal in the office, and talk to Mrs. Garcia about all my adventures.  Be sure to read my journal in a couple of weeks and see where Mrs. Garcia sends me.
Love,
Osborn the Bear

Hello, Moms, and Dads, Boys, and Girls!  Mrs. Garcia let me spend this week in 5th grade with Mrs. DioGuardi’s class.  We sure did work hard all week.  It’s a good thing I had Monday off for Columbus Day so I could be well rested.  5th grade is hard work!
I spent the week reading the realistic fiction book Maniac Magee with the class.  I really enjoyed all the discussion questions and learned about elements of fiction text that included:  plot, setting, conflict, resolution, and theme.  While working in small groups, I helped design a poster about the theme (Maniac always ran away from his problems) found in the book, and helped the group present the poster to the class.  Mrs. DioGuardi thought I did a great job with my public speaking skills.
I was fortunate to go with the class and participate in the Ballroom Dance.  I learned the different steps to the Meringue, Foxtrot, and Rumba.  My favorite was the “Stomp”, it is fast paced and easy to learn.  As I helped the students with their Ballroom Dance journal, I got to reflect of how exciting it is to participate in such a wonderful enrichment program.

During math, I enjoyed working on different strategies when solving multiplication problems.  I thought that the partial products method was easy to understand, and I was able to explain it to the class.  Mrs. DioGuardi reviewed the place value system, and I was challenged when I multiplied and divided factors with powers of ten until my classmates helped me understand it.  They are such good friends!
In social studies, Mrs. DioGuardi taught us about the Constitution and our democratic system of government.  I enjoyed using the Net books to read and learn about George Washington and I helped summarize and paraphrase the information into an essay, written in the first person point of view.
All this hard work was worth it, I got to participate in 5-D’s class party as a reward for positive behavior.  On Friday afternoon, the class got into their pajamas and had popsicles while watching a movie.  What a great way to end the week in 5-D.  I can’t wait to tell Mrs. Garcia about all that I did this week with the class and see where she sends me next.
Keep reading my journal to find out all about my next trip.

Love,

Osborn the Bear

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys, and Girls
This week Mrs. Garcia sent me to spend the week in the second grade with Mrs. D’Ippolito and her class.  I always like being in the second grade because they have their own hallway and I feel special.

Mrs. D’Ippolito’s class really likes to read, and I read many books in the class library.  In math class the students taught me how to use the unifix cubes to compare numbers.  By the end of the week I became really good at math.

2-D took me with them to their specials, and I had a lot of fun visiting and taking part in the classes. I had P.E. with Mrs. Johnson, library with Ms. Lipari, Art with Mrs. Burke, and music with Mr. Raynor.

I went outside with 2-D for a special assembly with the Rye firefighters.  They taught us about fire safety, and I learned about STOP,DROP and ROLL.

I sure felt like I was part of the 2-D’s classroom community by the end of the week, and I had a great time.  I wonder where Mrs. Garcia will send me next ??
Keep reading my journal to find out.

Love,
Osborn the Bear

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys, and Girls,

I was so happy when Mrs. Garcia told me I would be starting my adventure with the students in 1R.  I remember Mrs. Reitzig from last year and had lots of fun.  I tried to be the best guest that I could and use my best manners.  It was easy because I just followed what all of Mrs Reitzig’s students did, and I did the same thing.  I got to see how much 1R loves to read, when they snuggled with me on the bean bags and they read to me.  I also got to help 1R write a class book using their color words, and the class let me roll the dice during their math game. I had so much fun.   I learned so much with the students from 1R. Where will Mrs. Garcia send me next?   Wait and see……..

Love,
Osborn the Bear

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

I hope everyone had a great summer, and you are all rested for the new school year.  I sure was excited when Mrs. Garcia told me she was going to let me have more adventures around the school this year!  I can’t wait to tell her about all my adventures around the school, and about all the things I get to share with the students.  I hope you will follow my adventures and read my journal.  I know all the faculty and staff at the school work real hard and do a great job, and I can’t wait to see what I will learn.  Have a great year!

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

Talk about ‘warm and fuzzy’!  The students in 5L made me feel so welcome; everyone signed up to be responsible for me and my activities – which were many!  I participated in Music class and PE.  I learned about BWU (bulk weight unit) lists for traveling in Pioneer times, which, believe me, is no easy feat!  There were so many challenges; muddy roads and raging rivers, just two of the many adventures, but we finally made it Hacker Valley!  Thank goodness I had the help of such dedicated pioneer students.  The best was the Pioneer Hoe Down where we laughed and celebrated our teamwork and cooperation.

Stay tuned for future adventures!

Love,
Osborn the Bear

Dear Moms, Dads, Girls and Boys,
I feel so proud; I was awarded a “Certificate of Completion” for completing
The Hour of Code.  The students helped me understand the basic concepts of Computer Science.  All week long we were very busy reading; we read Wonder by RJ Palacio and Eagle Song by Joseph Bruchac.  The Rye Youth Council advocate visited with the class and we went to Library and to Art and to Music (I love to sing).  The most fun of all this week was Circus Arts. I got to see everyone having a great time showing off their amazing skills spinning plates, juggling, balancing, walking on stilts and using devil sticks.  Circus Arts was awesome!

Hello Everyone!

I visited K-B this week and I need a nap!  We were so busy ….. I learned how to listen at morning meeting, was so lucky to have stories read to me and I got to sit on laps and watch the students write and do their math!

Most exciting for me was when I even got to participate in a science experiment!  Do you know what happens to sand, salt and oil when added to water?  Well, I do!  Oil RESISTS water!

What a fun, busy week I had.

Love,
Osborn the Bear

January 21, 2014

Dear Moms, Dads, Girls and Boys,

I recently visited 5-D for a week and my brain got a workout!  I participated in the annual 5th grade pioneer simulation and traveled to Fort Independence, Missouri where I joined a wagon train for a great adventure to the west.  The students told me I made a good decision to travel west because I could grow crops for my family.

This week I also learned 2 new math skills.  I learned how to multiply fractions, which was very challenging.  I also learned how to draw area models which helped me better understand multiplication.  I really had fun challenging myself, especially since the students in 5-D supported me in my risk-taking.

The Louisiana Purchase was a new topic I learned about.  I was intrigued by how the land purchase impacted many different people and I enjoyed learning about it through different perspectives.  The students and I read from the perspectives of the Native Americans, pioneers, fur trappers and explorers.  I was extremely impressed with the text-to-text connections students made between the narratives and Esperanza Rising, which is a fiction novel we were reading together as a class.

These are my smart and helpful friends!  I will miss them!

Love,

Osborn the Bear

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

Happy New Year!  I hear New Year is a big holiday for humans, so I hope it was wonderful for you!  I just finished spending a week with another kindergarten class.  That is my third kindergarten class and, I must admit, I really love them!  Kindergarten students love to read, write, count and share, and K-D was no different.  They did all of those things with me.

This week I was back to dancing.  It was a good thing the fifth grade students in 5-C helped me learn how to dance because I had to recall all of my moves!  This week I practiced with K-D for their upcoming kindergarten show.  I danced and sang, but I promised not to give away the show, so my lips are sealed.

I will always remember my time with K-D for one very special reason.  We were learning how to count using our fingers when we discovered something that made me sad. . . I don't have fingers, only bear paws.  K-D taught me that everyone is different and it is okay.  Instead they helped me learn how to count using counters.  Those K-D kids are such good friends to me!

Here I am with my friends!

Love,

Osborn the Bear

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

I just finished spending 2 weeks with K-Emonds class and I am exhausted!  They involved me in every part of their school day and it was so much fun.  I never knew being a kindergarten student was such hard work!  I felt very comfortable on my first day because one of the girls I spent Thanksgiving with was in the class.

I began my visit hiding in the kitchen center.  It was such a good hiding spot because I was with the other teddy bears in the classroom.  It took a little bit of time but the boys and girls found me!

Some other fun and interesting things I did
-  students read to me
-  I played rhyming Bingo
-  I played in the house area
-  I learned about Sinterclaas
-  I practiced beginning sounds
-  I went to the computer lab

I am going to take a break and hang around the main office for the next few weeks.  Check back after vacation to hear about my other adventures!

Love,

Osborn the Bear

December 3, 2013

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

This past weekend consisted of many firsts for me!   Before the Holiday feast, Sophie and Connelly took me home to their house. I had a playdate with a friend and it was so much fun!  I had never been on a playdate before!  We played, laughed and had snack together.  On Wednesday night I went to bed early to get ready for my first Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving day started with a yummy breakfast and then a road trip.  After a fun car ride I met Sophie and Connelly's grandparents, Aunt and other members of their extended family.  They treated me just like I was a relative.  Spending Thanksgiving with Sophie and Connelly will be a memory I will have forever.

Love,

Osborn the Bear

P.S. The girls taught me a funny joke.

Why do pilgrims' pants keep falling down?
Because their belt buckles are on their hats!

November 26, 2013

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

November has been so much fun for me!  I visited 1-Napoleon, 4-Mondella, 4-O'Leary and the new Osborn Student Government. The first grade students were so welcoming and excited to have me be a member of their classroom community.  When I left they gave me an autographed portrait of me.  I display it proudly in my journal!  I also demonstrated good behavior so I received class bucks:-)

During my time in 4-Mondella I continued practicing my reading skills and even had the DRA-2 (Developmental Reading Assessment) administered to me.  I learned that I am reading above grade level, but I should continue practicing my fluency (that is my ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression).  Since I love reading and I do it every night, I do not see a problem with that homework!

4-Mondella also taught me about the Native Americans who lived in New York by reading nonfiction text with me, and they dressed me up as Dekanawidah.

One of my favorite parts about changing classrooms each week is hiding in the classroom on Monday mornings and waiting for the boys and girls to find me.  I really thought I found a good spot to hide in 4-O'Leary, but they were good detectives.  They found me in their Science 21 kit!  I think my hat gave it away.  What do you think?

In 4-O'Leary I learned about hot spots and took temperature readings around the classroom, visited different specials, practiced my math facts, and listened to a Native American presentation by a real Native American named Clint.

I was so tired one day, Mrs. O'Leary found me taking a nap in the classroom!

I felt so honored to have had the opportunity to participate in the new Osborn Student Government.  The students allowed me to choose a committee to be a part of and they thanked me for an idea.  I chose to be on the School Spirit Committee and I suggested we have a "Bring Your Teddy Bear to School" day.  Mrs. Garcia said we will most definitely have that as a school spirit day.  I am so excited!!!!

The end the month I am going to spend Thanksgiving with 2 special Osborn girls at their home.  I have never attended a Thanksgiving celebration and I am really looking forward to it.  Stay tuned for my next report!

Sincerely,

Osborn the Bear

October 31, 2013

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

It has been a while since I have blogged because I have been such a busy bear!  I have spent a week in 5th grade learning about Christopher Columbus, the many different strategies for multiplying, and reading the book Lunch Money by Andrew Clements. My most favorite time spent in 5-Carmen was during ballroom dance. I learned the Salsa and Tango.  Although I was a very short partner, the students said I was pretty good at it!

The following week I spent time with 1-Trapasso.  I participated in their new sink and float Science 21 lesson, read Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom, and attended library and music.  The students in 1-Trapasso wanted me to feel like a member of the school community so they made me a Halloween costume so I could participate in the Halloween festivities.  Check out my costume!

Next week I am off to a new class.  Stay tuned to hear about my next adventures and new learning.  I am having so much fun at Osborn School!

Sincerely,

Osborn the Bear

October 12, 2013

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

I just finished my visit to 3-Graham, which was another fantastic week.  In this class I learned a lot about multiplication and science, and I listened to a read aloud of a silly book about a boy who ate books!  It was called The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers.  This book taught me that illustrators are just as important as authors and that "digesting a book" doesn't really mean what it sounds like!

3-Graham is quickly learning their multiplication facts and, I must say, I did a good job keeping up!  I know how to use a multiplication chart and I have memorized all of the 2 and 3 multiplication facts.  I learned that knowing the facts is important because it will help me solve word problems quicker.

The students in 3-Graham went on a class trip to the Rye Nature Center while I was visiting.  Since it was raining they felt it was best I stayed at school, but I heard all about trees and seeds when they returned.  They truly are a smart bunch of kids.  I will miss them very much, but I know it is time for me to visit a 5th grade classroom next.  Come back next weekend to learn about my next visit!

Sincerely,

Osborn the Bear

October 5, 2013

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

I am such a lucky bear!  Being a student at Osborn is such a special treat.  The boys and girls are extremely friendly and helpful; they make me feel so important.  This week I spent time with 2-Short.  They took me to the school library, read books to me, helped me practice math, let me participate in their tree adoption activity and made rainbow loom bracelets for me to wear, which I wear proudly!  Each time I visit a class they make entries in my journal which I carry in my back pack.  Take a look at the entries 2-Short made this week.

I will miss the boys and girls in 2-Short and will always have fond memories of my visit to their class.

Sincerely,

Osborn the Bear

September 29, 2013

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

I had another wonderful week at Osborn School.  This time I visited with Mrs. Gelman's kindergarten class.  They are such smart detectives.  They found me almost as soon as Mrs. Gelman told them I was hiding in the classroom!

During the week I helped K-Ge learn how to write the letter N, practice drawing circles, and read books.  My favorite part of the day was Morning Meeting.  Every morning we began together as a classroom community reviewing the days of the week, checking the weather and counting the number of days of school. Mrs. Gelman is so sneaky. She was helping us learn about place value when we were having our Morning Meeting each day and I didn't even know it!

I loved being a part of this class.  I will miss my kindergarten friends.

Sincerely,

Osborn the Bear

September 20, 2013

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

I had another fantastic week at Osborn School!  This past week I spent time with 4-Crowell.  This class wanted me to see the school, so they took me to physical education, art and school photos!  I felt so special because I was able to join the students for the class photo and I was able to get my own individual picture taken.  I sure hope I make it into the school year book.

The students in the fourth grade class read books to me, snuggled with me and wrote a poem about me.  This is what it said:

Osborn learns every day!
Stuffed with fun and magic!
Brave to go into new classrooms.
Open to learning new things, like place value.
Really friendly to classmates.
Never stops trying!
The best school mascot ever!
Happy to read about geography of NY State.
Excited to improve his math sprint scores.
Brings happiness to our classroom!
Excellent listener to The Tale of Despereaux.
Amazing and awesome athlete, artist and musician.
ROCKS OSBORN SCHOOL!

They also illustrated books, wrote kind words and inserted pictures of our time together in my scrapbook.  When Mrs. Garcia came to get me, they begged her not to let me go to the next class.   I will remember my visit with them forever!

Sincerely,
Osborn the Bear

September 15, 2013

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,

I visited my first Osborn classroom this past week and I had so much fun!  I spent the week in 1-Reitzig.  The students in that class are very kind to one another and I really liked how they welcomed me right away.  Every child demonstrated concern for my feelings. They made sure I was comfortable and got to know everyone, and they respected me even though I was a bear and not human like them! Mrs. Garcia said she was very proud of them for following the iC.A.R.E. way.

During my time with the students in 1-Reitzig I participated in math, science, social studies reading and writing.  My favorite thing to do in the class was read a just-right book while sitting on one of the new GIGANTIC bean bags in the classroom library.  I enjoyed that time of day because the boys and girls read to me and snuggled with me.  My favorite books we read were Miss Brooks Loves Books (and I don't) and Corduroy.

Mrs. Garcia picked me up from the classroom on Friday and the children did not want to see me leave.  They said such nice things about our time together and made me feel proud.  Each student gave me a high-five before I left.  I will be visiting a new class this week, but I will never forget the friends I made in 1-Reitzig.

Sincerely,
Osborn the Bear
